We had quite of bit of grains when I was growing up in Wyoming and Kansas. My grandfather was a forest ranger, but had some land and raised animals, vegetables and grains: goats, horses, wheat, alfalfa, wheatberries. We drank milk from the goats, and ate beef from the cows and produce from the garden; wheatberry salad was a normal thing. Corn was also always important.
