Haidar Karoum Opens His Own Restaurant in D.C. and More Chef News in the Northeast
In Washington, D.C., Haidar Karoum (Doi Moi) debuted his first solo restaurant, the globally inspired Chloe at Navy Yard. Masala Story served up Indian fare in Brookland. Samuel Kim exited 1789. California-based Urban Plates soon makes its East Coast debut in Tysons Galleria. Anthony Lupo (Southern Hospitality) plants Magnolia Kitchen & Bar in Dupont Circle this spring. Marcus Samuelsson closed his restaurant at MGM National Harbor. Driftwood Kitchen and Ancient Rivers both shuttered.
In New York City, Tao Restaurant Group went casual with Egghead, an all-day egg sandwich venture in the Moxy Hotel. Pinky’s Space is a new takeout-only joint in the East Village featuring French-Southern fusion. Part restaurant and part furniture store, Blackbarn became the latest addition to Chelsea Market. Frank Langello is out at Babbo. Davelle is a Japanese cafe coming to the Lower East Side from the folks behind Izakaya. Tokyo-based Twelv, which specializes in high-end sake and Japanese small plates, is eyeing Soho and the West Village for U.S. expansion. Greenwich Grille closed after just two months. Sam Talbott pulled the plug on Pretty Southern. Rohini Dey closed her Midtown outpost of Vermilion. New York City lost its first dedicated cider bar, Wassail. Sizzle Pie shut down its two Williamsburg outposts. Atlantic Grill East Side closed after 20 years. Israeli chef Yuval Litmanovich (Meir Adoni’s Catit) joined Green Fig as chef.
In Philadelphia, Porta officially opened on Chestnut Street, featuring a menu filled with Neapolitan pizzas. George Sabatino exited Aldine as chef. D.C.-based District Taco signed on to join East Market. Michael and Nina Tinari Schulson are partnering with the Termini family on Giuseppe & Sons, an Italian restaurant slated for a spring arrival in Center City. The Ugly Duckling has shuttered.
In Boston, Blossom Bar brought together cocktails and Sichuan cuisine in Brookline. The pizza ovens are on at Newton’s new Olivia’s Bistro. Mamadou’s Artisan Bakery expanded to Arlington Center. Husband-wife team Conor Dennehy and Danielle Ayer are opening a restaurant called Talulla in Cambridge’s former T.W. Food. Achilito’s Taqueria is headed to Jamaica Plain. Papagayo closed its Fort Point outpost. Diva Indian Bistro shuttered in Davis Square. Longstanding Sultan’s Kitchen has closed.
In Vermont, Caleb Lara (Chatham Bars Inn, Harbor View Inn) was named executive chef at The Essex, Vermont's Culinary Resort & Spa, where he'll oversee two restaurants, Junction and The Tavern, as well as Cook's Academy, an on-site cooking school.
